Maple Heights is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 12,549 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first settlement in Maple Heights was made on the east side ofpresent-day Maple Street by white farmers from what is now Delaware Township and Short Hills Township in 1811. The town site was surveyed and patented on October 8, 1825 by John Dickey, who named it for maple trees that grew near his home in Maryland. A post office called Maple Heights was established at this location on December 17, 1830. A school built in 1870 served children of German immigrants who had settled along Center Road northeast of where present-day Park Avenue meets Euclid Avenue. By 1910, the population had grown to include Poles and Slovaks living near Lakeside Cemetery; as a result, a new school building was constructed on Euclid Avenue between West 4th and West 6th Streets (now Schoolcraft Place). On November 15, 1914, during World War I (), Maple Heights residents helped to raise money for their local military unit by selling bread they baked from their flour mills into sacks which they delivered to soldiers stationed overseas. The resulting war bond drive resulted in an increase in business for the bakery; until then it had been one of few small businesses open during wartime without interruption. In 1925–1926, when plans were formulated for downtown Cleveland's redevelopment as an "International Village", Maple Heights became one of two locations chosen for study because its high quality homes would be available for sale within walking distance of job opportunities and cultural attractions such as art galleries and libraries. The village never materialized but street name changes reflect today's downtown fabric – Washington Blvd., Prospect Ave., Elmhurst Rd.– while the old school building still stands vacant at 575 Euclid Ave., across from Case Western Reserve University’s main campus buildings (it has been used as parking lot since 2007). In 1969–1970 when Interstate 92 bypassed Cleveland due to construction around that time Northeast Gateway Parkway replaced I-92 exit 292 as traffic exitedCLEVELAND International Airport onto Cedar Road North with exits 1 through 5 being Cedar Road East then US 421 heading northwest leaving CLEVELAND International Airport behind becoming Cedar View Boulevard going through Sleepy Hollow into Mahoning Valley until reaching Brookpark Drive South about 2 miles south of where I-271 intersects with US 421 having become Clinton Highway . Maple Heights is a town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Maple Heights is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was laid out in 1836 by George Washington Brown and named for Maple Hill in Worcester County, England. It grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s as settlers came to fill the larger townships west of Cleveland that were being developed as farms or mining areas. In 1907, Maple Heights became one of thirteen communities consolidated into the new city of Cleveland. The commercial center of Maple Heights changed little from its early days; businesses included a grocery store, several dry goods stores and two banks. However, during the 1920s when Plain Dealer Newspaper Company purchased many small newspapers throughout Ohio, it began to change downtown with large blocks of office space on High Street between Euclid Avenue and Eastland Avenue (later renamed University Circle). Many other businesses followed suit over time until Downtown Maple Heights had become an extremely large mixed-use development with a variety of shops and services available within easy walking distance of one another. A new elementary school was built in 1925 on Elmwood Drive within minutes' walk of downtown; it served as a community center for many years before becoming an annex to Jackson Park Elementary School in 2002 which replaced longtime facilities at 413 West Superior Street which had been used by the Post Office since 1888 and local Mutual Life Insurance company since 1892/. The old Mutual building still stands next to Jackson Park Elementary School facing Superior Street (now occupied by IHOP), across from Euclid Avenue's busy intersection with Lake Erie Boulevard (now FirstEnergy Stadium/FirstEnergy Arena). One important event that occurred during this time period took place on November 11th1920 when John Fenton Stanton became Mayor after winning a runoff election against incumbent Averell Harriman who had served as mayor for six years prior. With Stanton running mayoral duties comes increased attention to various issues affecting residents such as water quality concerns brought about by newly constructed slag ponds near Progressive Auto Parts factory situated along University Circle just off High Street (then called Elmwood Drive) while also increasing law enforcement activity due to rampant crime rates throughout much of east Cleveland at this time including some particularly violent crimes committed against children living near Syncopedia candy store located on Locke Road just outside any municipality boundaries then considered rural areas by most residents including those living within Cedar Crest Township adjacent to where Lake Erie Boulevard crossed State Route 422 then known municipally boundary between Cedar Crest Township and Garfield Hills Township
