Mansfield is part of the Dayton–Cincinnati–Besseborough metropolitan area. Mansfield was founded in 1810 by John Mansfield and his family as a settlement on what are now State Route 131 and State Route 7 (now US 70). In 1817, John Mansfield donated land for a public square which became home to local churches and schools. In 1839, Mansfield lost its status as a village when it merged with neighbouring Dayton to form the larger city of Dayton. The town's first store opened in 1843. By 1860, there were four stores in town and over 100 businesses had been established within five years of its founding. The cotton industry played an important role in early Mansfield society; while no mills were built until after World War I, many homes were adapted into cotton plantations that continued to produce goods long after those enterprises ceased operations. Today, MansFIELD still has some significant industries including engineering services company Stonington Mills Inc., food processing company Park-N-Planters Inc., printing company Northwest Papermaking Company (now Litton Paper Products), among others. Mansfield was founded in 1796 by John Mansfield and others as a small community on the Scioto River. In 1814, it became an independent township. The first store in Mansfield opened in 1820. The town developed into a large agricultural center during the late 19th century and early 20th century. A cotton gin was built in 1903 and continued to be used until1985; it now operates as an exhibit hall at the nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Museum. During World War II, Mansfield served as an airfields for RAF Coltishall and USAAF bases at Perryville and Richland Township; it also hosted George Marshall's headquarters during his stay from 1942 to 1945. In 1952, Mansfield merged with Sandusky to form the more populous Sandusky–MansFIELD Combined Statistical Area (CSA). In 2000, Mansfield again merged with Sandusky to form the more populous MansFIELD–Sandusky Combined Statistical Area (CSA), which included all of Butler County except for parts of Summit and Toledo counties which are within Lucas County. As of 2017, this CSA has a population of over 11 million people according to US Census data
