Mansfield is a city in central Ohio, United States. The population was 34,895 at the 2010 census. Mansfield was founded in 1824 and became a municipality in 1868. The city's name comes from the town of Mansfeld, Germany, which was the site of an important battle between French and British forces during the American Revolution. In 1911, Mansfield manufacturing company Hardside Electric Corporation (HEC) began producing high capacity electrical kits for use by farmers throughout Ohio. Mansfield was founded on April 12, 1803 by John Mansfield, a Pennsylvania Quaker who had come to America as part of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Great Britain and France. Mansfield was originally named for Edwin MansFIELD, an American Revolutionary War soldier and captain from Lancaster County, England who had married a local girl in 1794. The name change occurred because at that time only men could vote in Kent County and so most people were named after their fathers or husbands rather than themselves. The town was incorporated on February 6, 1849 under the name of Mansfield Township. On May 15, 1870 it became a city when it received its charter from the Ohio General Assembly. The city annexed portions of Medina Township on December 1, 1904). In 1912 Mansfield merged with neighbouring village of Highland Park to form one large municipality with a population over 10,000 residents (the first such merger in Kent County). In 1964-1965 voters passed an ordinance establishing township status within city boundaries; this ordinance remains in effect today (though not binding). On September 11th 1978 all but two blocks of Main Street were destroyed by fire during rush hour; this event has been commemorated annually as "Firemen's Day" in Mansfield since then. In 2000-2001 there was much public outcry over plans to build a shopping mall near downtown; this mall never came to be though developers abandoned their plans after significant opposition from residents and businesses alike. On July 14th 2007– just days before summer vacation began for many students around town–an EF4 tornado touched down about 2 miles southeast of downtown damaging some homes including one owned by then Mayor Jeff Grebinski – significantly injuring several people including his wife Linda Grebinski who later died from her injuries at home that night! A few weeks later another EF4 tornado touched down about 5 miles northwest of town centre destroying homes along with almost every other structure within earshot! One can only imagine how terrified those living close to what could now be considered dangerous tornadoes must have been just minutes before they happened! This event eventually led to establishment of the Tornado Preparedness Committee which continues to work hard everyday towards preventing similar events happening again
Mansfield was platted in 1814, and became the county seat of Hardin County. The first post office in Mansfield was established on April 2, 1816. In 1842, the town of Mansfield was renamed Marietta after Martha Washington. On November 3, 1868, Marietta became a city and was renamed Mansfield City.
