Mansfield, Ohio is home to the oldest gun pouch in the United States. On July 26, 1835, Nicholas Brady created and patented a design for a pistol holster that consisted of two straps passing over the shoulder. The patent was granted to him for his invention, the Brady Gun Holster, which became widely known as the “Brady Bag”. The bag was designed to protect handguns from scratches or damage during transport. In 1868, John Wickersham developed and patented a new type of holster for pistols. This holster slid on rails so that it could be carried in either right or left hand fashion. It quickly became popular among law enforcement officers and soldiers due to its convenience and security. In 1806, trustees voted to change the local Indian title from "Wakulla" to "MansFIELD". This naming change followed an official purchase by American Fur Company representative Samuel Morse of land grants that included present-day Mansfield Township along with nearby villages of East Liverpool and Whitehall (now Lebanon). Many residents believed that this designation reflected better commercial prospects for their village since traders could now find easier access to rich lands farther north rather than having to travel through hostile Native American territory. The settlement grew rapidly with no major epidemics until white settlement destroyed many tribal cultures among various Miwok peoples living near or adjacent to what would become Mansfield Township in 1838-39 due largely to gold Rush fever sweeping across California during this period; however, few natives were killed as a result of these hysteria-fueled killings although some did die as a result of disease brought over by travelers who were seeking new opportunities for plundering indigenous nations while witnessing firsthand human misery caused by quick contact with wild animals introduced into new environments not yet fully adapted to life under European domination.) In 1860, portions eastward lying mostly withinpresent day Cleveland County – including present day Delaware Heights – were transferred herefrom Logan Township which at that point had 2,636 residents according To resident Drury Drysdale: “It seems strange that we should have left our beautiful home on Big Creek bedecked with clumpsbustersweet lilies just four blocks away [in Logan] when we could have easily purchased half a dozen lots thereabouts ourselves if we desired” .
