Mansfield is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Mansfield Township. The population was 21,839 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of what is now Mansfield were Native Americans who lived on the Scioto River before European settlement began. In 1795, two brothers by the name of Brockman acquired 640 acres (2 km²) around what is now Mansfield from the Ottawa and Assiniboine Nation for $4 per acre ($ in ). In 1801, James White purchased 8vo (approximate )of land from David Levy for $5 each way between Manchester and Athens, Ohio . This area became known as White Street because it bisected then-Indian Territory. In 1830, John Stephenson bought 5 acres (20 m²) east of present-day Main Street from Nicholas Husted for $10 per acre ($ in ). He named his purchase "Mansfields" after his father's home near Lancaster in England where he had been born a few years earlier. Stephenson had come to America to escape religious persecution back home in England and soon found success commercially farming land hereabouts. A post office called Mansfield was established in 1837, but no town grew up around it until 1840 when three men by the name of Ladd purchased 1 mile (1 km²) north-northwest of current Main Street from John Stephenson for $3 per acre ($=). These men decided to call their new town "Newburgh". By November 1850, Newburgh had a population of 10 individuals and developed into an actual town with its own government and Board Of Education - something that wasn't possible with nearby towns like Mansfield which only enjoyed township status until 1868 when they too became separate municipalities under the new formality called “Villages” (). The first mayor was Levi Hubbard who served one term from March 4th 1865 through February 14th 1870; he was succeeded by Jno Whelan who served two terms beginning on March 4th 1870 until December 15th 1875 inclusive; thenceforth Township Officers were elected every four years without term limits until 1902 when they were increased to six years due to population growth rates accompanying industrial development outside township boundaries Mansfield came into being as an organized village on November 30th 1860 under Act No 6254 entitled "An Act To establish a Village at MansFIELD", which created 2 wards within precincts numbered One Hundred Seventy Nine (one hundred seventy nine out side precinct one hundred eighty five), each ward consisting respectively thereof: North East Ward Number One Hundred Fifty Sixteen; South West Ward Number One Hundred Seventy Seven; East Indian Ward Number Two Hundred Thirty Five; Northwest Ward Number Two hundred thirtySix etc., with voting rights vested therein exclusively to citizens holding voting certificates duly designated therefor issued by Township Trustees pursuant to provisions contained herein? On January 1st 1861 voters approved incorporation into this Township at a meeting held at School House opposite Masonic Lodge No 3? The Acts creating these wards states:-- On motion made & seconded by Mr Whelan Aldermanic District No 7 THE VILLAGE OF MANSFIELD WAS INCORPORATED UNDER ACT NO 6254 AS SET FORTH IN THAT DAY'S MINUTES WITH ALL VOTING RIGHTS RESERVED EXCLUSIVELY TO CITIZENS HOLDING VOTING CERTIFICATES DELIVERED PURSUANT TO PROVISIONS CONTAINED HEREIN? Mansfield, Ohio is a small town located in Fairfield County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. Mansfield is one of two towns in Fairfield County along the Scioto River that are still considered rural. The other town is Dayton. Mansfield was founded by John Mansfield in 1810 when he and his family moved from Newark, Connecticut to what is now Mansfield Township. In 1812 John's father died and John married Sarah Ann Ketchum. They had four children: Sarah (1813-1884), Samuel (1815-1898), Johnathan (1817-1900) and Rebecca (1819-1900). In 1836 the township was organized into a block district which included Mansfield Township, Delaware Township and parts of west Fairfield Township. In 1839 the township became part of Fairfield County when it was formed from part of Medina County. In 1840 Hardin White built a gristmill on the Scioto River near present day MansFIELD; this mill continued to be used until 1907. In 1861 James Prentice purchased land east of present day Pershing Road for $250 from Nicholas Cushman; this land served as the nucleus for what would become Utopia Park later that year. By 1870 there were 30 families living in mansfeldtownships according to the 1860 census with 124 acres under cultivation yielding an average yield of 104 bushels per acre (.40 bushels peracre). This agricultural productivity growth continued through much of the 20th century but declined during World War II due to increased competition from new farming techniques such as corn hybrids or tractor farming which caused soil degradation and water usage shortages The last time that agricultural production peaked in Mansfeldtownships was during World War II when industry also began to decline due to mechanization however current economic conditions have seen resurgences in agriculture throughout central Ohio
Mansfield was founded in 1796 by Major General George Mansfield. The town was named for him and it is now a part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first settler, John Mansfield, arrived in 1798. In 1814, Mansfield had a population of 1,500 residents and it became a village in 1827. In the 1840s, the town grew to 2,000 residents and it became an incorporated town in 1854. It lost its status as an incorporated town after becoming a suburb of Cleveland in 1928. In 1951, Mansfield had a population of 25,000 people and it became an unincorporated community again.
