The first handguns in Mansfield were pistols. The first gun grip in the town was a pistol grip rifle, which was used by frontier farmers to shoot trout and other water sports. In 1827, General David Blount organized an expedition into what is now Kentucky to surveys the new Ohio country for a possible route to the Pacific Ocean. One of his officers, Colonel John Neely, purchased a rifleship called the "George Washington" and took possession of it on July 1, 1827. He fitted it with pistols designed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and ordered them built at his home in Quincy. On November 15, 1827, Neely placed an order for 120 pistols from Nicholas-Jacques Conte and delivered them to Quincy on December 3rd. In 1830–31, Mansfield had its first store: a small cottage near Main Street that served as the town's sole grocery until about 1840. In 1857–58 entrepreneur Wm Hulbert built a large frame addition (now part of Town Hall) on Market Square that became the city's first post office. That same year saw the introduction of handguns into Mansfield when George Stephenson donated two shotguns to be used as showpiece weapons at a meeting of Commissioners Court held at Woodstock Hotel in downtown Mansfield. From then on handguns gradually replaced rifles as main armament in most homes in Mansfield throughout the 1800s.

Mansfield, Ohio is a town located in the central part of the United States. The population was 39,853 at the 2010 census. Mansfield is one of the oldest settlements in Ohio and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 20 years. In 1813, General Anthony Wayne founded Mansfield on land granted to him by President James K. Polk. The town was renamed after John Cranch Mansfield, an area landowner and delegate to the Union Congress from Ohio. The first post office in Mansfield was established on February 17, 1814, and received its first mail from Cincinnati on October 3 that year. By 1830, there were seven residences in town and a total population of sixty-six residents (). In 1836, local resident Solomon Davenport donated 2 acres (0.81 km2) of land for a public square in town center which became known as Davenport Square today (). After Davenport's death in 1840, his son Ezra visited the square daily to collect taxes from passersby (). Ezra's grandson Elijah also visited the square during afternoon hours until his death in 1886; this event is now considered to be when Mansfield began experiencing weekday morning business growth (). Mansfield incorporated as a village on November 12, 1907 (), becoming one of only two villages within Hamilton County () to do so (); however it remains an unincorporated community today.Grave In 1922 (), two-thirds of all homes built in Mansfeldt Township were manufactured structures () making it one of ten township municipalities with such status nationwide ().
