Mansfield is a town in Union County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Mansfield is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the southern edge of Akron and north of Canton. Mansfield was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1824 as a small village on the Scioto River. The name originated from nearby Mansfield Township, which was named for Colonel John Mansfeld, an American Revolutionary War general and militia officer who had served under George Washington. In 1827, Wilkinson renamed the village after his political mentor, Senator Joseph Hamilton (the younger). When Congress created new Union County in 1837, it included all of present-day Union County except what was then known as Mansfield Township; this area became part of Steubenville Municipal District within Ohio State government when that district was created in 1840. The first post office in Mansfield opened in 1830; it closed three years later because of low population growth. The first store was built by Elijah Caldwell and operated for two years before being destroyed by fire. A second store opened in 1833 and continued to be operated until 1907; it is now preserved as a museum inside the old courthouse complex on Main Street.. In 1840, settlers arrived from Vermont and New Hampshire with their families and began clearcutting land near what would become Mansfield Village; construction started on a gristmill around this time but never finished due to financial difficulties caused by increased competition from other sawmills around town. In 1845, local citizens voted to incorporate as a town; its first mayor was Amos Eaton (. In 1870s through 1880s there were several attempts to move the county seat out of Akron but no success.) After several failed elections over many years (including one resulting in a tie), Commissioner John Crain succeeded in moving the county seat to MansFIELD during his final term as commissioner in 1915 following allegations that Akron officials were withholding tax payments to residents there…. By 1920 white voters had moved out of center city areas while black residents remained concentrated along Euclid Avenue NW where most jobs were provided…. At its peak enrollment (1 million) during World War II, Northern High School helped support military recruits throughout Northeast Ohio while also providing opportunities for students not associated withels like college or university degrees….. During much of these years community services such as libraries were either not available or very limited due to funding issues….. Finally beginning around 2000 things changed with increasing economic development followed by rising tuition prices making community service more important especially given Cutler'slee Community College's decision not to open an associate degree program…. Today there are few if any community activities taking place outside school hours leading some people[…]to say [Mansfields] has turned into just another suburb."

Mansfield, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio with a population of about 30,000. It is part of the Mansfield-Highland, OH-6 Census Designated Place and is located approximately 20 miles (32 km) north of Dayton, the state capital. The town was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1796 as an outpost on the Scioto River for his Regiment of Kentucky Volunteers during the Mexican War. In 1810, Mansfield became a village after it was chosen as the site for a new courthouse and jail following the failure of two previous buildings that were intended to serve this purpose. The cornerstone for both these structures was laid on July 24, 1810 by Colonel John Marshall Harison who served as Commandant of the First Brigade under General Wilkinson during the Mexican War and helped lay out Mansfield's gridiron streets. In 1825, when Richland County was organized from parts of Delaware and Fayette counties, Mansfield became one of its townships within that new county.
