Mansfield is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton metropolitan area and was formerly part of the Euclid–Mansfield–Hudson local government district. The town was founded in 1817 by General Anthony Wayne and named for John Mansfield, an Englishman who had come to America in 1795 as a trader with British forces under George Washington. The first store in Mansfield opened on July 4, 1817, and it soon became a center for agriculture and trade. In 1830, when Ohio gained its independence from Great Britain, Mansfield became its second incorporated city. In 1836, during the American Civil War, Mansfield joined Union forces and fought against Confederate troops loyal to Jefferson Davis. After Confederate General Robert Ewing's surrender at Appomattox Court House in 1865 following his defeat at Battle of Gettysburg, Mans field reverted back to Republican control until it became an independent municipality again in 1907. In 1951, MansFIELD received federal recognition as an International City/Town through designation by then-U.S Senator William Fulbright as "an example to other cities that are striving for international acclaim". When Cleveland annexed most of eastern Akron into its boundaries some years later (thus creating The Cleveland Metropole), much discussion occurred as to whether or not to annex Mansfield too - but ultimately no action was taken because many residents felt that incorporation would have been less meaningful than annexation given their largertown size relative to their new neighbor (Akhron Heights). As late as 1978 there were still few if any people living within territorial limits of both municipalities; however this changed when portions of Cuyahoga County were annexed into Cleveland making MANSFIELD once again home unto itself! Today – despite being nearly one hundred years removed from incorporation – MANSFIELD continues to serve as a vibrant community where everyone knows everyone else and businesses thrive due largely to its location within easy reach of major metropolises like Cleveland and Akron! While there are pockets of poverty scattered throughout town – especially along Euclid Avenue which sees high levels Of crime – overall life goesons smoothly here without incident thanks largely to tightknit communities made up primarilyof locals who enjoy playing together social games such as Bracelet (the only game you’ll find openly played all day long outside!), going out for ice cream after work or just hanging out at various local bars & restaurants - all while supporting one another through shared activities like arts & crafts shows & carnivals!
