In 1970, Macedonia annexed most of what is now Hamilton Township into its municipal boundaries and by 2002 it had reached its current size with a population of 2,723 residents; this number has grown slightly since then but remains below the three-thousand mark which would make it an unincorporated community for purposes under Ohio law). What remained within Hamilton Township continued to be organized as separate municipalities until 2003 when they were all consolidated into one municipality: Macedonia Township – also known as simply "Macedonia." Although still an unincorporated community under Ohio law, Macedonia has since become home to many businesses and businesses have started opening up inside their parent municipalities too (e.g., Starbucks opened its first store in Greece sixteen years ago).

The first settler in what is now Ohio was John Kapp of Lancaster, Pennsylvania who arrived on July 9, 1800 with his family. He purchased 3 acres of land from Ebenezer Morse at $100 per acre. The first house built in what is now Ohio was built near the present day intersection of Main Street and School Road by David Colburn. In 1802 John Kapp erected a log cabin on his land which he named “Macedonia” after Mount Macedon in Greece. In 1825, Greek immigrants settled here and named their new town "Macedonia". They came from Thessaloniki, Greece to start a new life as farmers and ranchers near the confluence of the Monongahela River and Maumee River. The town's name meaning "mountain" may have come about because of its location overlooking both rivers. By 1830 it had a population of 507 people living on just over two square miles of land.
Macedonia was a small country in the Balkans. It became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1453, and then part of Yugoslavia from 1918 to 1991. In 1991, Macedonia seceded from Yugoslavia, and became an independent country.
