Macedonia, Ohio is a small village in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Wilmington Combined Statistical Area. Macedonia was platted in 1827 and named for Mount Macedon in Greece. The first settler in Macedonia was Nicholas Weller and his family who arrived on May 8, 1827. Macedonia was laid out by James Muhlenberg and it became a town on March 10, 1830. On July 1, 1836 Macedonia became an unincorporated community when all of Medina County merged into Lucas County. In 1903 Macedonia had a post office with ZIP code 46301 and its name change to Macedonia-on-the-Hudson after the Hudson River crossing near its center. The first school in Macedonia was built on the corner of Main Street and Spring Street in 1829. When it opened there were only 11 students attending but by 1840 there were ten students enrollment at the school which continued until 1865 when it closed because of financial problems caused by World War I. After that time Macedonian schools operated separately until they amalgamated into one school district in 1954 After World War II there was growth around the shopping area known as "Majestic Mall" which developed due to new technology advancements such as television sets becoming available for purchase starting at $39 per set Macedonian residents also benefited from increased economic opportunities brought about by manufacturing plant expansions throughout eastern Ohio during this time period including those found within what is now Akron In 1957 Macedonian voters ratified a referendum creating their own independent government after years of resistance from Lucas County officials This event marked the beginning of an era where Macedonian culture began to gain acceptance among both American citizens and their counterparts living outside of their homeland However despite growing self-awareness among local residents few changes took place until 2006 when then Mayor Tom Foley proposed pardoning all crime convictions dating back more than 50 years ago catalyzing months of public outcry that eventually led to passage of legislation legalizing marijuana use within the village
