Macedonia, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Putnam County. The population was 21,912 at the 2010 census. Macedonia is part of the Columbus–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the Scioto River and lies within suburbs of Akron and Canton. The settlement began as a Methodist campground west of present-day Macedonia on Sandusky Creek in 1814 by Methodist missionaries from Kentucky under the leadership of John Wesley Hilliard and other ministers from that state. In 1821, Macedonian settlers founded a post office at nearby Athens Township with mail service to other towns in Summit County. In 1827, Macedonia became an unincorporated community when it was merged with Athens Township to form Athens–Macedonia Township. The name "Macedonia" originated with one of its founders, Jethro Gibbs, who named his farm after ancient Boeotia (present-day Greece). In 1829, Macedonian settlers organized into a town corporation and renamed their new community "Macedonia". On December 8, 1830, they voted to annex Warren Township to Macedonia for growth purposes; this annexation was confirmed by the General Assembly on January 3, 1831.
