Macedonia, Ohio is home to the oldest firearms manufacturer in the United States. The company was founded in 1838 by Nicholas L. Butler and his three sons, Nicholas, John, and Daniel. The company became a part of Colt Firearms Corporation in 1867. In 1899, Macedonia started manufacturing its own handguns which it continued to do until 1951 when it merged with Winchester Brands Incorporated to form American Arms Corporation. American Arms produced rifles and shotguns from 1951-1987 before becoming an arms distributor known as Ruger Firearms Corporation. Ruger Firearms Corporation was acquired by Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc. in 1987 and production of handguns stopped that year as well. Production resumed in 1996 under the new name of Ruger International plc. In 2002, Ruger International plc was merged into Group Max Incorporated who continue to produce pistols for the domestic market today under the name "Ruger".
