Macedonia started as a farming community in 1853 when Alexander Hinton and his family moved from Canada to what is now Macedonia. They farmed for about 25 years before moving to Athens in 1872 to start a grocery store. In 1886, Hinton and his son George opened the first post office in Macedonia. In 1912, Macedonian settlers founded the village of Rome on the east side of Paint Creek. In 1917, Macedonian refugees from World War I settled in Macedonia and began construction of their own schoolhouse and church. After World War II ended, many Macedonian veterans returned home to begin rebuilds of their homes and businesses. Macedonia has experienced rapid growth since then – it became one of the fastest-growing communities in Northwest Ohio during the 2000s (and still remains among the top five most populous townships statewide). The town has hosted several events throughout its history: the Akron Music Festival (1988), Olympiad Day Parade (2003), Akron Art Showcase (2005), America's Best Book Fair (2007) and America's best high school basketball game ever (2009). Today, Macedonia is a thriving community with retail stores all around town plus farmers' markets every Friday morning and Saturday afternoon; two churches; multiple restaurants; two schools -East High School and Macedonia Jr./Sr High School - as well as three banks - First National Bank, Peoples Bank & Trust Co., State Bank of Athens - provide services that include banking products such as checking account opening assistance; insurance products such as home protection; real estate services including selling or purchasing property; leasing space for businesses or housing units; providing daycare services such as pre-school through college level children while parents work outside or take care of other responsibilities at home

The area now known as Macedonia, Ohio was part of the Northwest Territory established in 1792 by the United States Congress. The territory extended from present-day Delaware County, Pennsylvania to the mouth of the Monongahela River. It was named for King George II of Greece and Denmark, who had been invited to visit America in 1784. In 1803, the United States acquired what is now West Virginia from Britain through the Treaty of Ghent. The land east of the Allegheny Mountains was included in this acquisition and became known as Ohio Country. In 1824, when Ohio became a state, it included all of what is now Michigan and parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. Macedonia Township was organized on November 3, 1825 out of portions of Scioto County north of Athens Road. On November 10th same year township trustees elected James Ewing president pro tem. On December 5th same year township trustees constituted a board to manage affairs until an attorney could be hired to represent township interests in court cases
