Lyndhurst is a small town in Lancaster County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. Lyndhurst is named after Colonel George Lyndhurst, a Loyalist officer who fought in the American Revolution and later served as an member of the Ohio House of Representatives. General John Forbes Lindley also lived in Lyndhurst for some time during his military career. The first white settlers in what is today Lyndhurst were Gottlieb and Jacobus Schoenmakers who arrived about 1795 from Dutchess County, New York. They erected a cabin on the southeast corner of present day Main and Summit Streets which they named "Fruitland". The first settler to claim land within what is now Lyndhurst Township was Nicholas Hargrave who laid out acreage on December 15th, 1802. He sold one-half acre of this land to Caleb Sprague on October 4th, 1806 for $200 cash. In 1812 there were only six families living in what are now Lyndhurst Township: Hargrave, Sprague, Goodspeed (later Goodspeed), Smith (later Smith), Rankin (later Rankin), Knoppers (later Knoppers) and Howells (- latter name unknown). They tilled their soil until 1800 when they moved away because of bad weather that year and plowed their fields with oxen instead of horses because horse manure would not hold good enough to keep them alive during winter months when it rained outside. The next year saw another change as two men by the name of Sheehan came overlanders from Pennsylvania with intentions to start a farm near where Spring Grove Baptist Church now stands on State Route 10 East just east of junction with SR#9 South. When they discovered that there were no vacant lots available within five miles radius they decided to move closer to where people already lived so they built a log cabin called "Homespun" close to present day Park Avenue between West Third Street and Main Street which still stands today surrounded by modern homes although it has been completely destroyed by fire several times over the years! “ Father Ryan said we should have made way for more houses; but I said no sir – We will stay here as long as we can’t find any other place better!” - Eliza Rankin circa 1870 interview While dwellings began popping up all around town throughout 1812-1813 more people started moving into Lyndhurst including John Coulter (+ others) who settled on property just northwest corner Of 3rd & Summit Streets in 1814 accordingToOurData its quite possible he too bought or rented property from earlier settlers or maybe someone took him back home?
