Lyndhurst experienced economic decline beginning in the 1950s due to suburbanization throughout Muskingum County and elsewhere within Ohio. In 1966, however, local groups together with state officials sponsored legislation that created an official redevelopment plan for Lyndhurst called "The Town Revival." This program led to increased development and cultural activation around the town while also creating jobs for local residents. It wasn't until 2007 that oil discovery came into play in Lyndhurst; this led to increased attention towards energy production within the community as well as investment both locally and nationally towards renewable resources such as solar power and wind power

The oil well at Lyndhurst is mentioned in song "The Well" by Oklahoma Joe and His All Stars (1948).
