Lyndhurst was founded in 1836 by George W. Lyndhurst as a small farming community on the banks of the Great Miami River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1853 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1868, Lyndhurst became the capital city of Ohio. In 1895, the city was renamed Cleveland after Cleveland Mayor James M. Caldwell. In 1907, Cleveland voters passed a resolution to make Lyndhurst the permanent home for the national headquarters of the Republican National Committee. The city hosted that office until 1951 when it moved to Washington D.C.. The original downtown block now forms part of Euclid Avenue and is home to several businesses including Jiffy Lube (1937-present), AutoZone (1984-2008), and Home Depot (2006-present). Other notable buildings in downtown include the Annex building which served asLyndhurst's first library from 1867 to 1870, and Plain Dealer Building which served as Municipal Auditorium from 1907 to 1952 before being turned into an art museum in 1957.
