Lyndhurst was a small town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2000 census. It is located on the southern edge of the University of Akron campus. The first Europeans to visit Lyndhurst were French Protestants from Grand Isle (now Haiti) who landed on July 7, 1686 and explored what is now Cuyahoga County. They named the area for Sir George Lynde, 3rd Baronet (1635-1702), an English gentleman who had been appointed surveyor general of North America by King James I in 1685 and who had taken part in a fur trading expedition to Canada in 1692. Lyndhurst developed as a small farming community during the early 19th century. In 1814, General David Hunt sold land to John Forster and others who founded Forster & Co., one of the most prominent earlyaning companies in Ohio. The company operated flour mills, tannery, cheese factory and other businesses until it went bankrupt in 1836. In 1836, Lyndhurst became part of Mahoning County when that territory was created from parts of Cuyahoga and DeKalb Counties. It remained part of Mahoning County until it became part of Union Township on May 15, 1903. On November 8th, 1907 Union Township changed its name to Lyndhurst after its incorporation into Jennings Township effective that date; this change reflected growing concerns about civic development within township boundaries given their distance from downtown Cleveland proper which still engaged much local commerce through horse drawn carriages or stagecoaches even though Jennings had become Caldwell City Limits six years earlier). Shortly before his death on September 24th 1905 Anthony Sayers donated land at Beechwood Avenue and Clairmont Road for use as a public school district which opened for instruction on October 4th 1906 with thirty-six students following classes each day from 9:00am to 12:30pm with an afternoon recess for middle school students followed by lunch time until 3:00pm until finally dismissal at 5:00pm; this system continued until 1917 when student attendance increased sufficiently so that two evening sessions were added each week which lasted into 1928; during these latter years there were also morning sessions lasting one hour each following dismissal from 11am to 1pm which made up for lost afternoon class time however no night classes were offered). The last session took place on December 2nd 1928 (due to lack of enrollment) and then all physical education activities moved indoors where gymnasium facilities were built later that year; today's USD 216 School District No 8 serves Lyndhurst residents through its website www.lyndhurstisd8 . After World War II ended saw rapid growth due largely to opening of new factories along Interstate 71 nearby such as Arcan Mechanical Manufacturing Company (later Orchard Machine Works) located adjacent to Lyndhurst High School located across I-71 exit 308A serving both Lyndhurst city limits westward while eastward continue service by Piggly Wiggly Markets served primarily by citizens living east side only beginning with establishment 1965 referendum vote approving annexation Toledo suburbs including large portions now known as Mentor
Lyndhurst was founded in 1811 by George Washington and his wife Martha. The first settler in the area, John Daugherty, arrived in 1814. In 1865, Lyndhurst became a village with a population of around 350 people. The town was renamed to Lyndhurst after General James A. Lynde of the Union Army during the Civil War.
