In Lyndhurst, Ohio, the town's first gunsmith was George Washington Dodge. The forge he built in 1814 was the first of its kind in America. In 1847, John Blythe opened his firearms business in Lyndhurst and quickly became one of the most popular dealers in America for pistols and shotguns. A large number of guns manufactured here including revolvers, handguns, rifles, shotguns and machineguns were used during the American Revolution. The towns post office was established on October 15th, 1827. The first mail coach from Cincinnati arrived at Lyndhurst on November 7th with letters from Dearborn County Michigan. This service continued until 1861 when it was replaced by a stagecoach service that ran between Dayton and Cincinnati. One reason for the popularity of these days is that there were no railroads in operation at this time which made transportation necessary for many items such as mail or guns. In 1865 George White organized a company to produce artillery rounds for Union troops during the Civil War. He founded White Arms Ammunition Company and soon became one of America's leading manufacturers of artillery ammunition products.
