Lyndhurst is located on the eastern edge of Muskingum County and just east of the Miami River within Trumbull County. The first Europeans to visit Lyndhurst were French traders in 1688. The first known settler in what is now Lyndhurst was Nicholas Vaughan who arrived in 1712 with his family from Rhode Island. In 1715 John White settled here and built a log cabin on a hill which he named White's Hill after himself and his son John Jr., also called White. A post office was established at Lyndhurst in 1727, and remained in operation until 1857. In that year it became part of Trumbull Township when those townships were created from parts of Muskingu

In addition to its shopping center, Lyndhurst has several other distinctive features including a golf course (the only municipally owned one in Ohio), a small school district that includes two high schools (Lyndhurst High School and Jackson Heights High School),and two parks - one public and one private - that are home to baseball diamonds, tennis courts, playgrounds, skateboards/skateboarding lanes, basketball hoops, fishing piers and Morey's Park all year round.

In 1857, Lyndhurst became a city and continued to grow, becoming one of Ohio's largest cities by 1870. By 1907, the population of Lyndhurst had reached 25,000 people. In 1917, during World War I, Lyndhurst was designated as an emergency military camp for troops stationed in central Ohio. The camp served until 1946 when it was decommissioned and its site sold to developers who built a shopping mall there.
