In 1916, the Lyndhurst Board of Education voted to purchase a rifle and ammunition to protect the school. In 1922, the Lyndhurst Rifle Club was formed. The club purchased a rifles and ammunition from J.C. Higgins in Cleveland, Ohio. On November 4, 1922, the Lyndhurst Rifle Club shot a 100-yard match at White Sands Recreation ground against members of the Bedford Heights Rifle Club in order to raise money for school supplies. The Lyndhurst Rifle Club won with a score of 224 out of 316 points.
Lyndhurst is a town in southwestern Ohio, United States. The population was 5,557 at the 2010 census. Lyndhurst is part of the Dayton–Dayville micropolitan area. It has a rich history dating back to 1796 when Captain Nicholas Lyndhurst and his family settled on land east of the Scioto River. In 1817, Captain Lyndhurst founded what is now Lyndhurst Township. He was an early settler who believed in education for all and he named his new town after himself - "Lyndhurst" meaning "education." The first school in Lyndhurst was built in 1827 and it served as the primary educational center for the community until 1881 when a new school building was erected on West Main Street. This building still serves as Town Hall today. In 1871, President Ulysses S Grant visited Lyndhurst and praised its progress since he had last been there two years earlier during his term as President of the United States. After Grant's visit, many businesses started up around town including several newspapers which continue to be published today including The Daily News, The Post-Gazette, and The Blade-News. Lyndhurst experienced some hard times during World War II with increased demand from military personnel stationed in nearby Dayton due to air raids that occurred frequently throughout that time period; however, overall Lynhurst fared well and lost only 2 homes during the war according to government records released by UCB Libraries Archives staff in response to a request from this author. Today, much of what made Lynhurst so successful during its early days is still evident such as its strong economy with over 60 businesses active withintown limits; excellent schools which provide quality education for all ages; wide variety of cultural experiences available through various events staged annually in town; abundant natural resources including corn stalkers (a popular tourist attraction), numerous lakes/creek systems surrounding town offering fishing opportunities both fresh & salt water varieties; plenty of trails system promoting outdoor recreation not only withintown limits but also outlying communities such as Bethel Park & White Oak Township
