Loveland is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 34,549 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. The name "Loveland" may be derived from the Native American word "Logan," meaning "place where buffalo range." From 1837 to 1881, Loveland was part of Lawrence County. In 1881, it became part of Butler County. The first Europeans to visit Loveland were French fur traders in 1795 and 1800 who named the region after Louisbourg (now Quebec City), Canada. Napoleon Bonaparte's forces landed on Long Island in 1794 during his retreat from Russia and destroyed much of what is now New York City; this event is commemorated by a statue outside Lower Manhattan's Wall Street financial district known as the Statue of Liberty National Monument. Captain John Fitch established a trading post at Long Pond on July 11, 1800 near present-day Loveland for himself and his partners David Dickey and Job Searles. A second post was established about two miles east at Low Point on November 3rd same year with storerooms and outhouses for 20 men byeman Samuel Greggs. On January 1st 1801 Fitch sold his land holdings along the Erie Canal to Nicholas Coleridge for $1,000 an acre (later increased to $5 per acre). Lveland is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Cuyahoga County. The population was 97,577 at the 2010 census. Loveland is located on the southern edge of Cleveland-Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is part of the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area. The city's ZIP code is 45401. Loliverdian settlement in what is now Loveland began as early as 1792 when a group of Quaker settlers from Pennsylvania arrived to build a trading post along the Miami River while they traveled eastward through what is now Cuyahoga County. In 1812, Samuel Hales organized an effort to purchase land in present-day Loveland from its then-native Indians for $1,000 cash plus goods that would be used to establish a townsite on what would become known as "Hale's Town". In 1817, John Fenton bought property adjacent to present-day downtown Loveland from David Wessels for $2,500 cash and began building his own mills which became known as "Fenton's Mills." By 1824, Fenton had built seven more mills; all but one were destroyed by fire in 1865 during construction ofCLEVELAND INDUSTRIAL PARK (now Fairview Park). A new mill was built on current site northeast of downtown in 1875 and continued production until it went out of business in 1916. The first school opened in what is now downtown Loveland on October 7, 1830 under instruction from Colonel Jonathan Dayton from Philadelphia via letter sent by then-President Andrew Johnsonordering schools established along riverbanks near points where steamboats could be launched for transportation downriver: "I request you to send me Boys who will learn how to read & write & do all sorts of work necessary for learning purposes before we leave this place ...." On February 14th 1840 Anthony Wayne attacked farmers Isaac Settle and his family with a knife while they were harvestin' corn nearpresent day Delaware Road south of US Route 422 just east of today's intersection with Ironton Rd.; 5 members including 3 children died instantly .. 3 adults also died ...... Wayne was recaptured within hours after he stabbed himself with a farm bandanna
