The Panic of 1893 caused a severe shortage of money which led to businesses closing their doors and lovelorn citizens losing their homes as collateral for loans. Businesses reopened but with much reduced payrolls because many workers could not afford to buy food or pay rent. Loan defaults increased during the depression as people lost their jobs while home prices fell 50%. One result of this economic crisis was an increase demand for agricultural land inLoveland due to lack of other opportunities available during the Great Depression era
