On October 15, 1827, the first land grant in what is now Loveland was made to Captain Andrew J. McNulty by President James K. Polk. The grant was for 640 acres of land near present-day Fairmount Avenue and Delaware Street. In 1868, a sawmill and gristmill were built on the site of the present-day hospital. The town began to grow rapidly as people came to trade, learn about new technologies, and raise crops. A post office was established in 1871, and growth continued until 1914 whenLoveland became a city with its own government. On July 1, 1916, Loveland voters passed a resolution authorizing the creation of an armory for the military purpose of providing munitions for war effort against Germany. The first building opened in 1919 and served as the municipal arsenal until it closed in 1974 due to budget cuts. The belfry (now known asFairmount Park) was completed in 1902 which is considered one of Loveland's earliest landmarks. In 1924, Loveland erected its first library branch with $5,000 from local donations and $10 per week from subscription fees collected from residents
