Loveland, Ohio is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 14,026 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. The area that now makes up Loveland was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. In 1819, Loveland became part of the Northwest Territory and in 1825 it became part of the Indiana Territory. On February 14, 1827, Loveland incorporated as a village. On March 15, 1830, its charter was amended to make it a town. Lohomand (pronounced "loo-hah-muhn") is an agricultural community in the U.S. state of Ohio, located about 17 miles northeast of Cleveland on the east side of the Cuyahoga River. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Loveland was first settled by Native Americans in what is now western Warren County in 1812. In 1814, Major George Washington Chappell and his brigade were stopped by Indian forces near present-day Loveland while travelling west from Youngstown to Fort Dearborn; Chappell's force was destroyed and all but a few men killed although some managed to escape into Canada. A three-mile wide prairie called Green Acres later became part of town; in 1836, a post office was established at Green Acres with James Hickey as its first occupant. In 1837, German settlers founded a farmstead called Heidelberg about northwest of modern Loveland – this farmstead became known as Heidelberg Heights after heading off from town onto high ground overlooking it to avoid being plowed under during normal wheat harvesting season. By 1840, most Germans had either left or been driven out of Lohomand by local Indians who raided their homes for food supplies and cattle; only a few scattered survivors remained until after American troops burned Heidelberg Heights on September 3, 1865 during their Battle of Perryville Campaign against Confederate forces led by General Robert Ewell that helped end the war in America.
