The ZIP code for Lorain is 45460. Lorain was first settled by Germans in 1814 and incorporated as a village in 1827. Its post office was opened in 1828, and remained open until 1959. The town name derives from the French word "l'origine," meaning "the beginning." The village of Lorain was eliminated when it merged with Elyria into the larger city of Cleveland in 1907. At the same time, much of what is now east of Euclid Avenue south to west of Superior Street were annexed to Marietta as part of that city's growth; thus, most residents now live on or near Euclid Avenue itself. Lorerain still has a small community hall which serves as its only public building and also operates a grocery store and two convenience stores (one general store and one hardware store). Lorain's history goes back to 1814 when German farmers founded a settlement here after departing from their original land base in eastern Sandusky County due to lack of trees or other natural resources there. A schoolhouse was built here in 1825-26 by German settlers who named it Schlosser Klinge (Castle Klinge).
