It lies on the Sandusky River near its confluence with the Shiawassee River, about 25 miles east of Cleveland on the southern border of Lake Erie. The area now occupied by Lorain was first settled by Native Americans in 1797, when they built Fort Mifflin on what is now Lorain Heights Boulevard in central business district. At that time it was part of British America. In 1801, as part of Henry Clay's "Fifty-Third Congress", Lorain became a town in State College Township, which evolved into Medina County in 1814 and then into Lorain County in 1825. The railroad arrived here during much of the 19th century and development started early; for example, German immigrants founded Davenport & Toledo Railroad Depot (now known as First National Bank) on Third Street just north of present-day Union Station starting in 1849 and soon other railroads followed suit including Great Western Railway Company from 1870 to 1890 and finally Northern Indiana Railway Company from 1901 to 1911 which developed what is now downtown Lorain complete with a grand old courthouse (1892), several large hotels (1911–present), many small shops and restaurants (now defunct) as well as various churches (First Presbyterian Church; Methodist EpiscopalChurch; Lutheran church). Most residents chose to stay put but several hundred people crossed into Indiana on October 9th while most were expecting orders home soon; this group numbered about 20-30 including future Mayor James Mapes () who also served as recorder for Trumbull township during that time period On November 3rd 1863 Union General Oliver Johnson overthrew Confederate General Robert Eikester's command at Perrysburg after several days' fighting which resulted in more than 150 killed and wounded (); Johnson then proceeded northeast towards Toledo before turning back east on November 6th due to deteriorating weather conditions (). On November 8th Ulysses S. Grant reached Trumbull Heights (), where he found Johnson's army retreating towards Cincinnati (); upon reaching Cincinnati he ordered his troops back onto their original march route instead . This event marked one significant victory for Ulysses S Grant over Confederate Generals Andrew Johnson () and Pendergast ()) resulting in two key political advantages for him following his election as President six months later 1) He became more powerful within American politics because he had successfully suppressed southern rebellions whereas Andrew Johnson remained popularly unappreciated despite having quashed many rebellions throughout his presidency 2) He demonstrated strong leadership qualities by rallying other Americans against Confederate forces even though they outnumbered him three-to-one
Lorain was founded on March 10, 1871 by a group of men from Cleveland. The town was named after George Lorimer, an early settler. By the end of 1870, there were only 27 people living in Lorain. The first store in the town was built on Main Street. The population grew slowly until it reached 100 in 1900. In 1907, the Lorain Manufacturing Company began manufacturing radios and other electronic equipment. It is still in business today. Lorain is also known for its cheese industry. There are two factories that produce cheese: the Lorain Cheese Factory and the Chicago Cheese Factory.
