Lorain is a town in Lorain County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton metropolitan area. The first European to visit Lorain was Nicholas Cuyler on July 4, 1698. The town began as a small community near the confluence of the Scioto and Mahoning Rivers; it grew slowly until 1865 when it became an incorporated village. In 1871, Lorain became an independent city after voters approved a charter that granted more autonomy to the municipality. Development continued through the years with new buildings being built on land purchased from Native Americans and other settlers who had moved into what is now Lorain during and after the American Civil War. On November 3, 1907, local citizens voted to become part of the United States because they felt their position within Ulysses S. Grant's newly created Federal Reserve District made them "the most important economic center in Northeast Ohio". On December 8 of that year, President William Howard Taft signed legislation creating Lorain as an official city with its own police department and mayoralty under ordinance No. 6355 (dated January 1st).
