The first European settlers in what is now Lorain County were French colonists who arrived in 1792. They named their new town after La Salle's exploratory voyage across Lake Erie to Lake Huron (now Superior) in 1679; this name was also given to nearby Xenia (now Steubenville). A post office called La Salle was established in 1814, but it was discontinued due to its distance from major markets and lack of infrastructure. Meanwhile, English settlers started arriving around 1800, when they acquired land east of present-day Lorain Falls along the Mahoning River. By 1815, they had founded a village called Xenia on the southern bank of the river just upstream from modern-day Lorain Falls. In 1819, they renamed their village after James Krieger, an early settler and member of Congress from Ohio; this name remained until 1903 when it was changed to Lorain following his deathbed request for that particular name. A railroad reached Xenia by way of Youngstown in 1839; by 1850, much of what are now downtown Xenia had been built up as a result of commuter rail service from Cleveland and other cities within reach via trackage rights purchased from Penn Central Railroad Company officials during that period. The City Beautiful Movement swept America duringthe late 19th century and began taking hold throughout most industrial North American cities; as a result, many small municipalities underwent rapid growth during that time – including Xenia which became one such municipality under Mayor John Fenton with assistance from architect George Gilbert Scott – becoming one of North America's " streetcar capitals."

It is located on the southern edge of Trumbull County and shares borders with United States states of Michigan, Indiana and Kentucky to the north-west, and Lake Erie to the east-northeast. The first Europeans to visit Lorain were French traders from Quebec in 1692 who charted a route from Québec through present day Toronto to Erie Bay then upriver to what is now Lorain Township. In 1795, General George Washington founded an outpost at Fort Niagara on Sandusky Bay which served as a military post forts on both sides of the Great Lakes system until 1813 when Ottawa took over operation from Great Britain. As part of their treaty negotiations with France (1763), US negotiators agreed to cede all land east of the Chicago River including what is now Lorain Township west of Trumbull Avenue southward to Canada for $5 million dollars which became known as "the Purchase". In 1814, General James Kieft established Kelleys Landing on Wright's Creek as an alternate landing for stage coaches travelling between Cincinnati and Buffalo during winter months because ice covered most other points along that creek near that time. He developed this site into what would become today's downtown core with buildings such as Sandwich House (now used as an annexe to Parma Hall University), Masonic Temple (now occupied by Parma Hall University) and Warehouse (now used by Brown Mackie Company). It wasn't long before arrivals started flowing into what would become Lorain proper: German immigrants in 1829; Irish immigrants followed in 1850; Poles arrived around 1860; Lithuanians arrived about 1865; Italians arrived about 1870; Scandinavian Americans started arriving around 1880s - some coming directly from Sweden while others came via Detroit or Chicago . By 1890 there were more than 100 families living here . The influx led initially to tensions among these different groups but eventually assimilation occurred leading many people heretofore unknown or unrecorded within local history As American industry boomed during World War II due largely to wartime demand for military goods exported overseas, workers poured into Lorains industrial suburbs such as Hillside Village beginning immediately following Pearl Harbor on Dec 7 1941 - just four weeks after America entered World War II . Many residents found work doing skilled labor at nearby factories while others joined service occupational forces like truck drivers or airmen .
