Lorain is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the eastern border of Greater Cleveland. The population was 43,521 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth most populous city in Ohio and the second largest municipality within metropolitan Cleveland. Lorain is also part of the Akron–Cleveland Combined Statistical Area, which has a population of 651,735 as of 2019. The nearby cities of Akron and Medina are both considered part of Lorain Township while Canton is an unincorporated community situated west of town. The history of Lorain goes back to 1811 when settlers from Maryland arrived here with their families seeking new land to settle after being chased out by Native Americans who had earlier killed many people in what is now central Ohio. In 1812Captain William Clark founded a small trading post on this site and named it for his adopted home State of Maryland – Lorain (the original spelling). The first post office was established here on December 12, 1812 under the name "Alnwick". It served as headquarters for several years before moving to "Middletown" near Wooster during 1814-1815 because that was where Governor John Greenidge had his winter quarters at that time. In 1828 Captain John Fenton opened up a store in what is now downtown Lorain and soon developed into one of America's leading commercial centers due to its location along Lake Erie across from Cleveland's then-new public works section known as Forest Park which later became Quicken Loans Arena. One result were two additional post offices: "LorAIN" (1829) and "Fentonville" (1830). In 1830-31 residents moved onto large tracts around town that were still mostly undeveloped until development began around 1900 primarily centered around North Main Street between Clinton Avenue and East Market Street where much valuable property remains today including many blocks surrounding FirstEnergy Stadium currently occupied by Tower Homes! Downtown Lorains demographics changed dramatically starting about 1920 when African American families started coming here from Detroit and other parts northward looking for land eastward towardsCLEVELAND! They brought with them their slaveholding traditions which helped create some unique neighborhoods such as Shaker Heights/DowntownShaker Village just outside downtown LOrain proper; Newark Gardens off Euclid Avenue just southeast; Mount Pleasant off Wabash Avenue just northwest; Vandalia Heights off Delaware Ave., northeast corner Bronx Drive; Roscoe Hills southwest side Olmsted Highway off Highland Road near I-580 interchange; Beechmont south side Paulding Road just northwest beyond I-480 Interchange Finally reaching our current boundaries along Clinton Avenue east/west boundary with Medina next door all while Sears closed down its 17 buildings along Elmwood Avenue east side in 1967!!!

Lorain was a village in Morrow County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. Lorain is located on the western edge of Morrow County and is part of the Akron Metropolitan Area. It began as a small settlement named Black Hawk on the Scioto River in 1814 by Captain John Smeaton and his family. The village grew to include a mill, schoolhouse, store, blacksmith shop and other businesses during the 19th century.During World War II Lorain became one of two principal sites for manufacturing aircraft parts for the United States military. In 1951 it merged with neighboring Holmesville to form what is now known as Lorain-Holmesville Township. Lorain's history can be traced back to 1814 when Captain John Smeaton founded Black Hawk Village on the Scioto River in what is now Morrow County,. At first there were only six families living in Black Hawk Village: Smeaton, his wife Martha (born 1792), their children Samuel (1796-1857), Rebecca (1800-1864), George Washington (1798-1867), Jameson (1799-1868) and Margaret Reubensohn (1800-1868). After Captain Smeaton died in 1815, his children continued to live in Black Hawk Village while their father operated the mill until 1830 when he moved out permanently also leaving behind four unmarried daughters who helped take care of their mother and six brothers and sisters who lived with him during his lifetime. The first post office opened in Black Hawk Village on July 4, 1816 under the name of Whitehawk due to its location along US Route 6 north of Columbus (). When US Route 6 was extended eastward into Morrow County from its course through Cincinnati,, Whitehawk became an important route for mail deliveries because it separated much of that county from Toledo where goods arriving at Liverpool warehouses were unloaded onto boats before being transported by wagon or steamboat downriver to Morristown () or Cleveland (). One brother - Jameson - started a general store near present day Center Road which soon became one of Lorain's most important commercial enterprises. By 1830 all but three members ofCaptainJohnSmeaton's immediate family had died – Samuel (), Rebecca (), and Margaret Reubensohn () – so Captains John Purdy () and Isaac Shaver () took over running Black HawkVillageandthemill until Captains PurdyandShaverBothDiedIn1834(). AftermathofBlackHawkVillagefireinMayOfthatYear:All vacant homes were auctioned off&all furniture &equipment sold; total value $2276 (). SamuelPurdy rebuiltBlackHawkVillageinMay OF 1840afterVacantHomeswereAuctionedOff&AllFurnitureAndEquipmentSold; TotalValueOfBuildingAtThatTime$2736(). OnMarch 3rdofthat year AnthonyGibbons built Tavern On Main Street which later became Mrs Gibbons' Store &Well House.. This tavern stood until 1909 when it burned down.. . On April 9th 1860 Anna Maria Hecker bought land west of town from Ebenezer Dickey for $100() contributing towards construction of First Methodist Church which eventually served as Lorain’s primary religious center (). Mrs Hecker also erected a barn & house on her property which still stand today adjacent to First Methodist Church (. That same year Lillie Ann Haggerty married Hiram Crain at Greenlawn Cemetery.) By 1862 all but three residents had left town due to lack of business opportunities although some people did remain until 1865 when Union troops arrived during the American Civil War and destroyed most all buildings within sight including Black HawkVillagewithout Leave(). After that time no further development occurred until 1870 when Charles Waugh came along with 160 men intent upon founding a new community called Dayton just south of Lorain where they would build storeships responsible for carrying goods across Lake Erie en route to Cleveland (). Unfortunately this venture failed because Waugh lacked financial backers even though Dayton reached its peak population around 1880 beforebecomingaghostvillage。 By 1890 only five people remained inside Forster Township proper while Dayton had expanded well beyond that boundaries into Springboro Township() where it remains today
Lorain was founded in 1892 by George W. Gilmore and others as the town of Holyoke on the Scioto River. It became a city in 1902. Lorain was destroyed by fire in 1917, but was rebuilt. The city's first Mayor was William Fenton Chase.
