Lorain, Ohio is home to one of the most significant gun targets in American history. The Lorain Rifle and Pistol Club was founded on October 15, 1892 by Baptist minister Dr. J.C. Goodrich and local businessmen John Dickson and Wm. Ahern. The club built a rifle range at the old Lorain County Courthouse which was open to the public from 1893 until it burned down in 1954. The first target rifle match took place on November 3, 1892 at the now closed Goodrich Rifle Range. 1st National Match winner George Armstrong Custer shot an 8-shot “buffalo” at 100 yards using a Winchester Model 1895 carbine that he had won at a shoot out with Buffalo Bill Cody two months earlier in Omaha, Nebraska. At 2nd National Match held December 5-7, 1892 in Springfield Armory in Chicago, Illinois both rifles were limited to 12 shots each but resulted in two wins for Custer and Sam Adams of Ft Worth TX over Amos Badenoch and Harry Krieger of Philadelphia PA (the future Mayor of Philadelphia). In 1903 baseball Hall-of-Famer Lou Gehrig played his last game as a player for the Cleveland Indians before entering into hospital due to pneumonia; this made headlines all over America because of Gehrig’s age (43) being above average for those days for playing professional baseball A major expansion occurred when on February 14th, 1905 Dr James Fenton of Dayton purchased 10 acres north of town from businessman Thos Hickey for $5,000 On May 24th 1907 newlyweds Mrs Amelia Earhart Wright (née Post) and Lt Colonel Clarence Johnson set up shop around the corner from their home on Main Street (#405) serving breakfast to customers who came out shooting practice targets with their shotguns while they flew Concorde aircraft model 449s across the sky
Gun targets are a popular type of target shooting, and they are easy to make. All you need is some plywood or other heavy material, a drill, screws, and a coat of paint. To make your own gun target, first cut the wood into strips about 2 feet long and 1 foot wide. Then lay the strips out on your ground so that each one is at least 4 inches from the other. Now mix some white paint and black ink together until you have a spreadable mixture. Place one strip of wood onto the center of one of your striped target woods. Now place another strip over the top of the first strip and mark six small circles with pencil on either side of the first stripe (see photo). Now cover bothstrips with more wood strips so that all but one circle are covered (photo 2). Finally, add hinges to each end so that they can be opened and closed easily to move your targets around (photo 3). You’re now ready to shoot! Aim your gun at one of your targets and pull back on the trigger until you see it fly off in front of you. Keep an eye on your target as you fire additional rounds at it—you should get good accuracy with this type of shooter!
