Lorain is a city in Ohio, United States. The population was 23,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lorain County. The city is located in the northeastern corner of Ohio and is bordered by Lucas County to the south, Cuyahoga County to the west, and Stark County to the north. The first known inhabitants of what would become Lorain were Wyandots who built villages on high ground overlooking the now-demolished town of Parma on the Scioto River in 1788. In 1814, three settlers from Delaware brought over land that forms much of downtown Lorain and named it for their native state: Delaware (now Delphi). A post office called Delaware was established in 1816, but no residents lived there until after Ohio became an independent country in 1819. In 1830, General David Dixon decided to make a new settlement on high ground between present-day Erie Boulevard and Scioto Avenue east of where Parma once stood. Dixon named it "Dixonville" in honor of his predecessor as governor of Ohio Territory (1815-1817), James Ketchum Dixon. The first store opened near Great Lakes Road and Ironton Avenue on October 7, 1830; it was also one of only two stores open during that time period in Lorain Township; other businesses closed before 1840 due to lack of customers or competition from larger settlements nearby with more developed infrastructure such as churches and schools. In 1836, businessmen John Hargrave and Asahel Patterson acquired 640 acres (250 hectares) along Beaver Creek east of present-day Wright Road for $1 million dollars (). Patterson laid out a town grid on this property which he called "Pattersonstown". By 1840 about 200 people lived there including farmers, mechanics, carpenters etc.; however most business activity took place around downtown where Patterson hadbuilt a school/market/ Bible study house/ warehouse etc.). The township's first election took place November 3rd,[2] when John Hargrave ran for Selectman against incumbent Peter Janssen. After winning by large margins he served two terms from 1840–48 before becoming Mayoralty candidate again in 1850 but lost to Janssen by just 2 votes out OF 103 cast during that year’s election[3]. One reason given for Hargrave’s defeat may have been his opposition to building a road intotown through part of township owned by him bordering Cuyahoga County; this road would eventually be built following his death some years later In 1852 selectman George Wetherall was elected president pro tempore[4]; however he resigned 2 months later upon learning that Governor Richard Mudd had appointed Samuel Tilden as attorney general instead[5]. On December 12th James Ketchum Dixon III died suddenly at age 74 leaving an estate valued at $10 million dollars [6]: This gave riseto speculations among some residents about whether or not Mr Dixons willed his entire fortune – worth perhaps $100-$200 million today – to charity after death rather than give it away like many wealthy men do leave their money behind . Some properties within what would become downtown Lorain were sold off immediately following Mr Dixons death including parcels extending along Beaver Creek northward past Dayton into Medina county [] although those sales never resulted in any tangible development taking place within that area [] In fact much development did take place outside what we know now simply because people wanted something new & different […] Today you can find plenty Jaggers checking out our beautiful buildings (& parks!) while kids are playing basketball & softball right next door!
