Lorain is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and the county seat of Lorain County. The population was 41,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Sandusky River in central Ohio, about 30 miles (48 km) west of Cleveland and 50 miles (80 km) east of Toledo. Lorain was founded by General David Dixon in 1796 as a military post on land granted to him by the British Crown. The post grew into a town, first named New London but then renamed after General John Wayne during the American Civil War. In 1813, it became an independent municipality under English rule when several surrounding towns seceded from Lorain Township to form that township; however, because Lorain's status as a town remained unchanged until 1868, when it merged with neighboring Ottawa Township to form Lorainshore Township, its name remains attached to both cities today. In 1868, due to increased population growth and railroad development in central Ohio caused by America's entry into World War I, Lorain annexed Ottawa Township; this annexation created what is now known as downtown Lorain and much of north-central Ohio's suburban belt including Midtown Lima and many other neighborhoods within just a few blocks of each other located on two main streets: State Street/Eighth Avenue NW and Ontario Boulevard/ Sixth Avenue NE - one block south of City Hall which still retains some vestiges of its colonial Revival architecture dating back to 1840s although most homes were built between 1960s-1980s following new zoning code changes that promoted single family dwellings while exempting commercial properties from building regulations).
