Lorain, Ohio is a city of about 100,000 people located in the heart of the United States. It has a rich history that can be traced back to its founding in 1837. At the time, Lorain was part of what is now Hamilton County and was known as “The Town on the Lake.” The town was founded by James Caldwell and his brothers-in-law, John Holcombe and Nathaniel Wright. The first store in Lorain opened its doors in 1837 and sold groceries and other items necessary for everyday life. Soon, other businesses started to open up around town and soon there were several stores and businesses operating within walking distance of one another. In 1872, Lorain became part of the newly formed City of Cleveland. This new city had a vision for itself which included making it an important economic center for the region. To this end, they developed plans to build a large industrial park which would include factories, warehouses, schools and other infrastructure needed for an incoming commercial center. The city also built a large dam in order to provide water power for their new industrial park. Despite these efforts, Cleveland eventually lost control over Lorain during World War II and it reverted back to its original name: “The Town on the Lake” once again! However, due to increased development around town (including construction of Interstate 680), Lorain has since become an important cultural center in central Ohio with several major museums including Parma Museum of Art (the largest art museum west of Cincinnati), Grosse Pointe Arts District (home to multiple theaters), as well as numerous restaurants/bars/nightlife options such as Joe’s Lounge & Grill & Tavern or Jimmy John’s Pizza!.
