Lorain, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lorain County. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1825 as a post office on the Scioto River by General John Ewing and his wife Anna Warner Ewing. It became a city in 1907 and was renamed Lorain in 1911 after Major General James Lorraine, hero of the Battle of Alma. The city was again renamed to its current name in 1929 when it merged with neighboring townships to form what is now Lorain Township. Lorain has been known for its manufacturing plants such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and American Can Incorporated since before World War II; Litton Industries also had an operation there until it closed in 1987. Other major employers include Warrenpoint Health System and Porter University; both are located within the township boundaries but are not considered part of Lorain proper geographically speaking. In recent years, many small businesses have closed or gone out of business due to competition from larger ones from other areas within Ohio or Pennsylvania; however, some new businesses have arisen to take their place including: QVC (the home improvement retailer), FirstEnergy Corporation (a large natural gas company), Apollo Bank (a community bank), Bemis Companies (a manufacturer of agricultural machinery) and several restaurants that serve primarily Polish food items such as Zdobycie Nowoczesnych - one block east of downtown - which has been open for more than 50 years . There is also an art museum named Stroud Museum Of Art located on Main Street between Third Avenue and West Sixth Street that features works by Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning etc.; this facility opened in 2002 adjacent to Lorain High School with classes starting up again Fall 2006 after being closed for several years due to budgetary reasons following the death of its founder Jane Stroud who had endowed the museum with most or all her assets prior to her death in 2000 . In recent years there has been talk about building a new high school within town limits but no definite plans have yet surfaced although some discussions may still be taking place behind closed doors

Lorain is a city in the northeast Ohio metropolitan area. The population was 61,567 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-largest city in Ohio and one of its ten largest cities by population. Lorain is located about eight miles (13 km) west of Cleveland on the right bank of the Cuyahoga River. It lies within Greater Cleveland Combined Statistical Area. The first European to visit Lorain was Nicholas Columbus in 1694 while on his way toestablish a trading post at modern day Akron. He named it after his French friend and mentor Jean Baptiste Point du Lac who had accompanied him on that trip. Point du Lac had been given land by General James Wright for a permanent settlement and renamed "Lorain" after L'Ange de la Rivière, an early French explorer who visited America in 1688-89. The Duquesne Company built Fort Pitt on the river's left bank near what is now downtown Lorain in 1795 as part of their effort to acquire territory west of Lake Erie for British crown control during the Northwest Indian War (1763-1781). In 1802, James Kapp founded Kapp & Sons millinery shop which still exists today as one of Lorain's most important businesses. In 1812, John Dennison sold 10 acres (40,000 m2) of land east of downtown to George Stephenson for $1 million dollars New York State cash plus $200 per acre ($6000/km²) over 10 years from 1815 until Stephenson's death in 1848; this property became known as Stephenson Park (now Downtown Cleveland). In 1814 Angerand Sisson erected a two-story red brick schoolhouse on West Third Street between Clinton and Harrison Streets – this building served as both School District 2’s first schoolhouse and municipal hall until 1931 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1830 Wm Halleck donated 100 acres (40 ha) southeast of town limits to build what would become Grant Park; this gift has since been doubled with an addition totaling 248 acres (130 ha). The village site extended beyond its current boundaries into Stark County some time before 1830 but never developed beyond small lots along Clinton Avenue southward from Mud Creek towards Elyria where four grist mills were located: Dunham & Mapes flouring company operated from 1850–76; Ewing & Sons sugar refinery began operations late 1800s; Illinois Sugar Refining Company moved there circa 1910 On July 12th, 1908 issue #835 page 3B published notice that Lorain Mill will be closing effective June 30th because “the present business cannot be sustained without new investments” Some sources claim that J R Guggenheim invested some money into Lorain Mill but no evidence exists to support this claim However upon inspection we found nothing suspicious or fraudulent about any investment made into our mill

In 1902, the Lorain Manufacturing Company was formed to produce automobiles, radios, and other products. The company continued to grow until it merged with General Motors in 1955.
