Lorain, Ohio is a city in the United States located in Lucas County. The population was 5,822 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lucas County and home to the Lorain Correctional Institution. A post office has been in Lorain since 1892. The area now known as Lorain was first settled by German-Americans in what is now central Ohio. In 1814, John Brougham purchased land from the Shawnee tribe and named it after himself – Brougham Manor. By 1830, over 60 families had moved to what is now downtown Lorain from all over central Ohio because of its fertile soil and easy access to transportation including stagescoops that took passengers upriver to Chicago. In 1837, General David Dixon established Fort Dearborn on a bluff overlooking the port of Toledo which became an important military base during the American Civil War. The fort served as a staging ground for Union forces moving into central Ohio during the war while also providing shelter for Confederate soldiers who traveled through Central Ohio en route to join their army at Ft Wayne, Indiana. In 1845, George Stephenson built his first steam locomotive on the Canadian River between Toledo and Erie (now part of Cleveland), creating one of history's greatest engineering achievements. After completing construction of his engine at Grand Rapids Locomotive Works – then located in Warren Township – Stephenson brought his locomotive downriver to Norwalk where he converted it into aworked model for shipment across America on freight trains called "The Great Western". After years of growth and progressivism by Mayor Wm Halleck and City Councilmember Fenton Dutton with assistance from local farmers and mechanics who set up shop around town square (Ohio's first commercial center) much progress was made with electric streetcars running throughout downtown Lorain starting in 1898 when electrification initiated daily service along State Road 7 between Toledo and Elyria; this added excitement not only for residents but also travelers who could no longer rely upon horse or buggy services while exploring this unusual new community nestled among tall trees near beautiful waterfalls! During World War II many local businesses Myer & Co., Altec-Chrysler Corp., Juglar Bros., Superior Paper Mills closed their doors due to shortages in materials needed for production; however most locals quickly adapted without any major disruptions thanks largely to Mrs. Stranahan’s leadership! The GI Bill created many opportunities for veterans such as men like Vernon Walters who worked at UAW Local 2997/Cleveland Automobile Parts Company until they were laid off just prior to induction into military service; Walters later opened his own hardware store which remains open today! Today Lorain provides excellent education opportunities with more than sixty thousand students attending schools within its boundaries both public and private including top ranked universities such as University Heights High School (Public), Wright State University (Private) as well as Mercyhurst College (Public). Additionally there are numerous business entities locally founded or continue operations such as FirstEnergy Corporation based here since 1923 before being acquired by Enron LLC.; Little Caesar’s Pizza serving up classic Italian cuisine has been here since 1957 before opening up shop outside downtown surrounded by high end stores giving this once small town an exciting nightlife presence!
