Lorain's history goes back even further than John Lorrain himself; he arrived in America aboard a ship called HMS Belfast when it set sail from Dublin on October 25th 1892 bound for Wilmington, Delaware via New York City where he intended to find work on land grants that had been issued by President James Kappenberger pursuant to an act passed by Congress earlier that year known as the Homestead Act. His intentions were not realized but he did find some temporary employment workingethrift farmsteads near Xenia before finally settling down in what would become his hometown on July 4th 1892 when he purchased 2 acres (8 ha) of land adjacent to present day Main Street from James Ackerly for $10 per acre ($160 per square foot).
