In Lorain, Ohio, the first rifle ammunition was produced in 1847. The early ammunition used black powder which made it quite corrosive. To prevent corrosion, the ammunition was coated with a white lead compound known as "patina." In 1853, an experimental program began to develop new propellant systems for firearms. A small batch of 9mm Parabellum rounds was developed using this new propellant system. The popularity of this Ammunition led to its production until 1907 when all cartridges were changed to 7.62x39mm NATO caliber effective January 1st, 1908.
