After years of planning and construction by local leaders including Mayor John Lennon (1943-1945), Tinker Field opened its doors to civilian aviation on October 3rd 1947 with what would be his final public appearance – training new pilots for American Airlines Flight 447 which crashed into Lake Erie killing allsicd passengers and crew on December 15th 1947 after taking off from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport without proper certification or insurance under Title 14 USC §191(a) “Prohibited Aircraft Operations” – less than two months after he took office!
