The city was founded by planter George Washington in 1779 as part of the Northwest Territory. In 1814, Lima became the capital of Ohio after its statehood. The city experienced significant growth during the 19th century as a result of its strategic location at the confluence of three large rivers – Scioto, Monongahela, and Thames – and its status as a commercial center. In 1892, Lima became home to America’s first national rifle championship when 95 rifles from 11 states competed in what was known as the “National Shooting Championships.” In 1903, Congress passed an act providing for regulation of firearms and amending various statutes related to hunting and fishing. This act created gun control regulations that have been in place ever since. Today, Lima is considered one of America’s most active shooting communities with over 1 million residents who own or lease guns for personal use or business purposes. Lima, Ohio is a small town in the southern tier of the Ohio Valley. The population was 5,021 at the 2010 census. Lima is known as one of the "rusty old towns" because of its many historic buildings and businesses. The area that now makes up Lima was first populated by people who lived around what is now called Tiffin Township. In 1814, General George Washington visited Tiffin Township and ordered everyone to move out because he felt there were too many Indians living there. A group of settlers from Pennsylvania moved into Tiffin Township in 1816 and started a farm named White Hall which still stands today. The land that would become Lima was first settled by families from Lancaster County in 1824. William Crouch established a store in what is now downtown Lima on Market Street in 1830. He became an early leader in the community and helped to build a schools, churches, Masonic Lodge #8 (now First National Bank), and other important infrastructure during his lifetime. By 1840, most of the people living near where present-day Lima sits had arrived or been transplanted to this new location. In 1846, Major General James Ketchum decided to make Peru City his permanent headquarters for the military government of Ohio after it was purchased from Native Americans following their battle with Ulysses S Grant's army at Battle Creek . Ketchum gathered together all available farmland within five miles (8 km) of Peru City so that farmers could be able to raise crops without fear of British occupation or Indian attacks. This action led to increased development around Peru City as developers began looking for ways to escape British control and reach new markets outside of Canada and America Lima's incorporation as a village occurred on July 15, 1865 when all residents voted 3-1 in favor over two petitions seeking incorporation as a town due primarily to concerns about lack of water supplies and transportation options being available at that time . On October 16th , 1865, Lima became one municipality with Joseph Ewing appointed Mayor
