On February 14, 1907 – days after Franklin D Roosevelt was elected president – Lima submitted a petition to become a town; it received its charter from the Ohio General Assembly on March 4th that year. The original town plat included present-day downtown Lima as well as part of what are now Midtown/Downtown Streetsboro and Southside neighborhoods east thereof The first store in downtown Lima opened its doors on May 12th 1904 at 5th & State Streets NE In 1905 local farmers Harvey Hargrave & Wm J Fenton set up a mill which produced flour for local restaurants The first automobiles were bought by citizens in 1908 In 1916 construction began on Northwestern High School which served as both schoolhouse and home for many years before becoming known as Brown University–Lima

From this initial location Lima grew rapidly into one of America's most significant towns with over 120 buildings erected between 1800 and 1830 including churches and schools. During the Mexican–American War (1846-1848), Lima served as part of General Antonio López de Santa Anna's Army during its march through central Ohio to Mexico City. On October 26, 1847 Santa Anna's forces reached Lima where they burned all but three stores in what is now downtown Lima while also destroying several homes and businesses; these actions helped provoke anti-Mexican sentiment across much of Northwestern OH at the time). After Mexican independence was announced on November 8th by Simón Bolívar in front of Independence Hall in Philadelphia (), American troops led by General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived at Toledo September 11th to take possession; upon their arrival American soldiers set fire to several buildings including Stonington Presbyterian Church which stood until 1865 when it was razed following Union victory over Confederate forces at Battle Horseshoe Bend (see photo above). Lima experienced rapid growth after becoming an American town due to its strategic location midway between Springfield, Cincinnati (the main commercial center) and Pittsburgh (the main military center) along then newly created Routes 9 and 30 which connected those two cities. In addition to its role as an important trade hub for both easterners moving into what are today northeastern Ohio via these routes as well as newcomers moving westward into what are today southeastern OH via US Route 62/Cincinnati Road/Great Western Railroadroads., Lima also played host to many political meetings that were used by participants in the United States Constitutional Convention held at large venues such as White Sulphur Springs or Sandusky just north of town during July 4th 1860 despite local efforts by citizens notables like Levi Coffin near Clinton Street Armory not only preventing public access but also setting off fireworks that injured more than 40 people according to contemporary reports (). The success enjoyed by early 20th century Lima continued well into the 21st century with major development taking place around downtown area including multiple highrise office towers currently serving as iconic landmarks within city limits while other portions have seen less recentdevelopment although there continueto be numerous restaurants and small businesses operating within walking distance or commuter bus service radius providing ample opportunity for retail business opportunities even outside busy tourist seasons..

The city continued to grow and by 1870 it had a population of 10,500 people. In 1907, Lima became part of the newly formed United States when Ohio became a state.
