In 1902, Lima’s first patent glasses shop was opened by W. H. Cline and Sons. In 1916, Lima’s second optical store, The Peru Glass Company, opened on Third Avenue near Pearl Street. In 1954, the Optical Merchants Association of Lima merged with the Ohio Optometric Guild to form the Ohio Optometric Association (OAA). The OAA continued to operate as an umbrella organization for optometry businesses throughout Northeast Ohio until it disbanded in 1987.

When the Erie Canal was opened in 1825, Lima became an important transportation center. The canal provided a direct route between Buffalo and Cleveland, and made Lima one of the larger cities in Ohio. As well, it helped to create a new economy in Lima by providing access to markets outside of Toledo. In addition, the canal also increased trade between Ohio and New York City.
