Lima, Ohio (population: 47,000) is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and part of the Lima-Middletown-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was estimated to be 51,811 as of 2019. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lima were American Indians who traveled up the Scioto River in search of fur trade with the French and British during the 17th century. In 1814, General George Armstrong Custer fought his last battle near this town during his Indian Wars campaign against the Sioux nation. The town was founded on July 12, 1815 by Simon Bolivar Menendez and José de la Serna y Pardo as La Vaca de Tierra del Fuego Station under Spanish rule before being renamed Lima on October 16 of that year in honor of Spain’s viceroy in Peru Francisco Pizarro. On December 8, 1827, it was again renamed Lima when Peru gained its independence from Spain and became an independent country called Peru–Ecuador until 1903 when it became Ecuadorian again pending ratification by Peru. Lima, Ohio is a small city in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the shore of Lake Erie. The population was 362 at the 2010 census, down from 478 at the 2000 census. Lima is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area and is home to Case Western Reserve University, as well as several other high-tech companies and businesses. The first permanent settler in what would become Lima was George Hockaday in 1814. He built a cabin on an island in the mouth of Muskingum River and raised chickens and pigs there until he sold his land to John Dennison in 1825 for $5 per acre (approximately $ today). Dennison's brother Eli bought another site on Beaver Creek about two miles east of present day Lima for $10 per acre (approximately $ today). The town began developing around this nucleus when soldiers from Fort Dearborn constructed a log schoolhouse here in 1830–31 and hired local boys to haul logs for them. In 1836 James Waring erected a large frame house on Beaver Creek square, which served as town hall until 1841 when it burned down along with most of town during a wood shortage caused by overhunting by Indians. In 1840 Samuel Morse brought over his printing press from Easton, Pennsylvania, and started printing newspapers here before moving it to Cincinnati later that year. By 1850 Lima had become an important transportation hub with steamboats visiting both Cleveland and Buffalo daily; its location made it convenient too for farmers to bring goods upriver by boatload or wagon train before they reached market prices back home; and Merchantsmens Hall was built west of downtown in 1851–52 as a commercial building used by merchants wanting their products displayed prominently near their customers’ homes so they could be seen more easily. A fire destroyed Merchantmens Hall in 1861 but not before Sears & Co., one of America's first department stores, opened its doors there six months earlier! Lima was founded in 1798 by a group of Englishmen who were looking for a new site to settle after the Battle of Fallen Timbers. The town was named after the central city of Lima, Peru, and it grew rapidly because of its location on the Ohio River. In 1814, Lima became the capital of Ohio Territory and soon developed into one of the most important cities in that region. In 1821, the United States acquired Oregon from Spain and decided to make that territory its new national capital. Lima was not chosen as the new national capital because it had no fortifications and no water resources; instead, it was chosen due to its strategic location between Cincinnati and Detroit. After a few years in office, President James K. Polk decided that Lima would be the permanent seat of government because Columbus had been unable to find an effective way to trade with both those regions. Lima saw some significant growth during World War II as part of Operation Torch, which aimed to open up Europe for Allied forces during World War II. The city experienced high levels of bombing throughout the war, but overall fared relatively well thanks in part to its excellent infrastructure. After World War II ended, Lima experienced some declining popularity due to economic challenges and changes in American culture; however, it has since seen significant growth and development over the past several decades.
