Lima, Ohio is a small town in the Northwest corner of Ohio. It was founded in 1810 by three German brothers, Johann and Nicholas Grosse, and their family. The name comes from the Spanish city of Lima, which was at that time the capital of Peru. The population of Lima peaked at 20,000 in 1910 but has since declined to 10,000. In 1940 the population was 9,500; by 2000 it had decreased to 6,500. The first settler in Lima was Johannes Kuhn who came overland from Germany in 1792. He built a cabin on the bank of the Scioto River and named his property "Kuhn's Ferry". By 1800 there were about 25 homes hereabouts. In 1810 two brothers named John Grosse founded Lima thanks to land they acquired from Pierre Pigeonneau for $1 per acre (about £8). They started out as farmers but soon became merchants and traders with connections all around Europe. For many years they were sole proprietors until their son Nicholas bought out their interests in 1837 and continued running their business as an family company until his death in 1865. In 1840 James Wetherbee moved to Lima from Delaware after purchasing 640 acres east of Tiffin for $4 per acre (about £60). At this time much of what is now downtown Lima was still rural farmland dotted with huts or log cabins used by wagon drivers transporting goods between Toledo and Cleveland. James Wetherbee became one of the most important early settlers because he developed a large tract of land north-west of town along the Scioto River that eventually became part of downtown Lima developments today including State College Drive SW and Cathedral Parkway NW
Lima was founded in 1794 by Captain George Wilkinson and his settlers. The city was named for the location of a small Indian village, Lake Limon. The first post office in Lima was established in 1801. In 1830, the city became a county seat and the name changed to Lima Township. On July 1, 1854, Lima Township became part of Cuyahoga County. The township's boundaries were expanded on February 14, 1907 when it took in parts of Euclid and Mayfield townships. On November 3, 1928, the township lost its status as a township and became part of Lima again.
