In 1892, a group of businessmen in Lima, Ohio, decided to start a gun lock company. The company grew quickly and in 1902 it moved to its current location on Elm Street. The business continued to grow and by 1916 the company had become one of the leading manufacturers of gun locks in the United States. In 1951, the company merged with another gun lock manufacturer and became known as National Firearms Corporation (NFC). After years of growth and change, NFC disappeared in 1985 when it was acquired by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.

A keyless Entry lock has a code that is entered into the lock to unlock it. Combination locks have two or more pieces that need to be assembled together in order to operate. Kerchik Gun Locks are unique in that they require a key in order to open them.
The first gun locks were patented in Lima, Ohio on December 12th, 1868. A patent for a lockable gun was filed by John Dunlop and George Stephenson. The first guns to be locked with this type of lock were the .45 Colt pistols.

The Thompson submachinegun locked with a hitchcock system was one of the earliest handguns ever fielded by the United States military. The hitchcock system allowed for quick changes of ammunition without having to unscrew or replace the entire magazine. This gave soldiers an advantage in battle because they could reload quickly and not be limited by their supply of ammunition
