The first real growth came with construction during the Gilded Age (1885–1914) when Lima saw an influx of immigrants including Italians who began to work in factories throughout central America for wages much higher than prevailing American wages at that time; many Peruños also worked as unskilled laborers or prostitutes earning tips which helped support their families back home until World War I halted those activities completely. Lima experienced significant economic decline during World War II as many manufacturing jobs were lost due to wartime Production quotas set by President Franklin D. Roosevelt; however new industries such as plastics manufacture have since returned to Lima after being established elsewhere in Ohio and other Midwestern states during postwar boom times. The current downtown area has been extensively renovated following Hurricane Sandy which destroyed much business activity within the downtown core but has resulted in increased tourist spending which has helped keep Lima economically active albeit somewhat indirectly aided by its location within easy reach both domestically and internationally via air travel links with Akron/Cleveland OH
