In 1865, mail order company Sears & Roebuck founded a department store called Sears & Co.; this store operated until 1954 when it merged into Kmart Holding Corporation. In 1870, railroad entrepreneur George Stephenson partnered with local landowner David Dixon to build the Erie Railroad through central Stark County from Dayton to Findlay; this railroad reached Lima via a branch line running south from present-day Market Street near downtown Lima (now part of I-70) just north of whereHighLevelRoadnowlies. Lima, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lima County. It is located on the Scioto River in central Ohio. The population was 103,751 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Lucas County after Cleveland and Akron. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Lima Township in 1813 as part of a group led by John Donelson. The town was named for Lima, Peru, where George Washington was born in 1789. In 1824, when Athens Township was created from parts of Lima Township, Lima became its first incorporated municipality and its second largest city. In 1870, an act to organize counties was passed by the General Assembly of Ohio and enacted into law by Governor David Ralston; however, it did not take effect until November 1, 1871 due to lack of signature from one side or another. That year saw significant development when CincinnatiGas Light & Coke Company negotiated with two partners - American Bridge Company (now Columbia Gas) and Key Metals - to build a mill on the Scioto River opposite downtown that would become known as "The Big Mill". The mills rapid expansion created significant problems for both economic stability and public health because noxious smoke emerged from burning raw materials used in manufacturing processes; this caused some residents to nickname The Big Mill "the Devil's Factory". By 1886 there were fourteen mills operating in Lima alone out mining coal which contributed $1 million annually to local coffers On July 4th 1889 issue of "The Dayton Daily News", local businessmen Wm Haysworth (president pro tem), James Atherton (vice president), Wm Sibley (treasurer)and Jno Gorman (city superintendent) organized a meeting attended by over fifty business men at Masonic Lodge No 2 on Walnut Street called 'An Act to ordain an incorporation'of what they thought would be their new City Limits'. They failed to receive enough signatures so they applied again but this time received ninety six ballots with nineteen against incorporation while thirty three voted yes creating an 'unincorporated village'. After more than two years struggle several men including Haysworth resigned from their positions within days after learning about plans for annexation by Cincinnati through secret agent Alfred Hitchcock who had been spying on them throughout their deliberations

Lima began as a small trading post on the Great Lakes in the early 1800s. It grew into an important commercial center and later became the capital of Peru. Lima was sacked by the Spanish in 1536, but was soon recaptured by Peruvian forces. In 1824, Lima became the capital of Peru again after it was liberated from Spanish rule. The city experienced significant growth during its first decades as its population tripled to over 100,000 people. However, this growth came at a cost: infrastructure development was slow and expensive, leading to congestion and inequality among residents. In 1860, Lima hosted the Congress of Berlin which led to new international trade agreements between Peru and Germany and Italy. The city also became home to one of Peru's largest Jewish communities during this time. By 1930, however, Lima's economic woes had begun to mount and its population had decreased by half to under 20,000 people. In 1936-37, riots took place in reaction to government austerity measures designed to reduce poverty rates within the city limits; these riots are considered one of the most violent episodes in Lima's history. During World War II, Lima saw increased activity due to American military involvement in South America; however, little progress was made towards rebuilding postwar society until after 1975 when democracy returned to Peru following an abortive coup d'état engineered by General Augusto Pinochet
