Lima also had a large manufacturing sector until recently; it now employs only 7% of its workforce but makes up a significant portion of Dayton's economy. The name "Lima" comes from the Churcahua language word huanca (meaning “river”). The first European to sight what is now Lima was Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1565 while exploring the area between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia on his way to India or Asia. He named this location Ciudad de la Perla (“City of Pearl”) because he found pearl shells at one point along the river. In 1697 General George Washington sent Major Christopher Gadsden westward through present-day Ohio on his ill-fated attempt to find a passage to China overland via Lake Erie; Gadsden discovered that there was no such route and returned home before reaching China proper by way of the Great Lakes region instead! In 1806 John Crampton built Fort Covington on high ground east of town after hearing about an abandoned fort farther downriver in what is today Union County. In 1814 General Anthony Wayne defeated Native Americans at Battle Horseshoe Bend south of town; during this battle Lt.-Colonel John Balthazar erected a large flagpole in memory of those killed or wounded therein which still stands today next to US Route 66 just outside town limits. After American independence was declared in 1776, skirmishes continued between British and American troops until 1784 when Indian hostilities ended following Treaty negotiations at Sandusky Bayou near modern day Cincinnati, Kentucky – Peru became independent from Spanish rule effective July 14th that year becoming known as Peru proper within days! Lima began settlement by Europeans in late 1810s when James Wilkinson platted out land northward from where he served as surveyor for rifle manufacturer Drury & Company across Scioto River from current day downtown Lima including parts now inside City Limits: all except 6 acres lying Northwest corner then northeast corner where lots were sold off separately beginning November 4th 1811 lot #1 sold by Wm French 1 acre $3 postpaid & lot #2 sold by Wm French 2½ Acres $5 paid @ $24 per acre & so forth thru out ensuing year…the whole block lying Northwest corner becameknown later as purchased property known Downtown since then….In 1830 plat map shows 8 Lots laid down Northwesterly sideof SciotoRiver opposite current site occupied earliest Nov..4th lot being plat No#1 bought by Geo Fritsche . . . within few weeks prior to sale Geo had already moved lots East side Xmas eve 1830 conveyed Lots Nos #2 & 3 f rom original platted area …Surrounded soon afterwards by buildings etc., Downtown business district gradually emerged [and] The first store opened October 30th 1830…..The first brick building erected here May 24th 1830……….Old Mercantile Exchange Building stood here until Oct 1938 when it burned down providing social services for intrastate residents prior to new building established….The old jail closed September 9TH 1840 after serving more than 50 years……………..Today only two remaining structures left standing from original six buildings erected here: historic First Baptist Church - which may be entered through basement level walkway leading into interior), old post office/mailbox which once housed public records under roof still exists inside building surrounded by intact fence etc.; also visible are foundation walls surrounding former bank building which served as Post Office from 1865 til 1970

After the war ended in 1946 many high-ranking Peruvian officials fled abroad amid allegations that they had received secret Spanish funds which they used to help businesses function illegally in exile.
