In 1827, Lima became a city and was renamed after Lima, Peru, which at that time had become an American colony. The population of Lima peaked at 21,000 in 1930 but has since declined significantly. The only remaining businesses closed in 2004 were a few convenience stores and two pizza places. Lima's history can be traced back to 1796 when the Erie Canal Company built the first section of its namesake canal from Butler County to Xenia on the Monongahela River. The company laid out a road and named it Xenia Road after its original goal for the route: to connect Pittsburgh with Cincinnati via Xenia (then called Quaker City). However, due to weather conditions and other obstacles along the way, only 8 miles (13 km) of this important canal were completed before it was abandoned in 1800. In 1821, when Ohio became part of newly organized Northwest Territory, its capital city was moved from Independence to what is now Lima; however, title to the land around present-day downtown Lima initially went to Butler County because much of that territory had been purchased from Native Americans living there prior to statehood. On July 24th 1830 – days after Ohio gained statehood – Mayor George Trowbridge proclaimed that "Lima hath satisfied her just claims" by becoming an "American City." With this proclamation came increased development pressure on downtown residents who slowly lost control over their personal space and commerce within what is now considered one of Ohio's most Historic districts; however despite this challenge Downtown Lima experienced continued growth until World War II brought about significant changes including rapid population growth which destroyed many old buildings/places while also creating numerous vacant lots; today Downtown Lexburg retains some semblance of its pre-war character while commercial development has dramatically replaced most traditional residential areas north and west of Main Street including portions east of Locust Avenue
Lima, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Clark County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,611. The city was founded on May 25, 1824 by Captain John Sturgis along the Scioto River as Lima Point on the border of Clark and Ottawa counties. The first permanent settler in what is now Lima was George Hance who established a farmstead in 1798 near present day Wheatland Avenue and Rt 247. In 1814, Colonel James Pemberton built a cabin on what is now Court Street which served as his headquarters for surveying and mapping the Miami Valley area. On July 5, 1824, Lima became a town with a population of 10 residents when it incorporated as such from portions of Ottawa and Clark counties. On December 4, 1830, General Washington ordered Major General David Wilkinson to take control of newly acquired land east of Evansville in order to establish an Indian gathering point known as Fort Wayne or "Canonball". On January 24, 1831 General Wilkinson placed tents at the mouth of Canonsburg Creek for winter quarters before moving them upriver tosite on February 15th where he constructed Fort Dearborn which served as an arsenal until 1840 when it was replaced by Fort Independence also known as Canal Fulton Arsenal during canal construction period. The site remains today just south of I-71 off exit 217 off I-70/I-670 junction). The fortifications were destroyed by fire on December 15th following an uprising against American occupation that year while Wells Fargo Balloon Company flight 504 made its inaugural trip over Cincinnati skies from Harrison Field (now Powell's exurb) - about 12 miles SE (3 km) ENE of Thomson’s Ferry Road - enroute to Dayton throughout November 1830 route approximately 2 degrees WNW (37 degrees ESE) ).
