On May 15th 1861, when Union forces burned downtown Athens during their attack on Confederate General Robert Eichelberger's army under General George Armstrong Custer (the event is commonly known as "The Battle of Athens"), more than 100 people were killed and over 200 injured including many children who were playing near Cumberland Avenue when it caught fire On July 3rd 1863, nearly one year after Chattanooga had been destroyed by Union troops during The Overland Campaign (and two months before Franklin), Lima voters passed an ordinance declaring themselves a seceded section of Tennessee with its own government separate from that of Ohioans living within her borders On November 5th 1865 after Confederate General Ewell retreated from President Abraham Lincoln's field army at Appomattox Court House following his defeat at Gettysburg Castle Ligonier County native James Meeks surrendered his commando unit called "Moses" east side road between High school – now University Drive With most eastern sections thereof taken by Union troops early December 1862 and much larger amounts delivered westward prior to February 1863 for campaign purposes only - few residents remained “within” Confederate lines especially due to lack o food or other necessities...virtually all homes east or south off High School Road were confiscated/burned by Union forces January 1st 1863 while all homes west off said road since then have been occupied by civilians including portions used for storage now being leased back to local governments
