Lebanon, Ohio is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron metropolitan area. The name "Lebanon" may derive from the Hebrew word לָבִים (LeBam) meaning "mountains." It was given to the community by its founder, George W. Lyon, who donated land to create a village in 1867 and named it after his native country. In 1916, Lebanon became an incorporated city when it annexed the unincorporated communities of Highland and Uniontown. The first settler in Lebanon was James Wilkinson in 1827. He purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of what is now Cincinnati with plans to establish a log cabin colony on it as a warning against Indian attacks. Wilkinson's heirs developed the town into a small village that grew around him until he sold his interest in Lebanon to Andrew Gregg in 1868 for $5 per acre ($30 per km²). At that time there were only five houses and no other buildings or infrastructure apart from an Oversized Grain Elevator that still stands today on Williamson Road near what is now Middlebury Elementary School. In 1916, when Bernardino Leone purchased 1/4 acre (0.16 km²) of land adjacent to what is now Delaware Drive in neighboring Uniontown for $10 per acre ($160 per km²), he began development of what would become known as Lebanese Hill Park which included construction of homes, churches and schools as well as Lafayette Street between High Street and I-675 which served as Lebanons main commercial street until 1974 when I-675 was re-routed through central Akronsvile making Lebanese Hill Park an enclave within that city limits only %. Today Lebanese Hill Park remains largely undeveloped with some residences having been replaced by new developments over time while much of Beirut including its original downtown district remain virtually unchanged although commercial establishments have relocated elsewhere over time including one currently operating out of a large building located just north of Lebanon High School which once housed both Holy Name Catholic Church and Baptist church
In 1814, the United States purchased land in what is now Lebanon, Ohio from the Kingdom of France. The following year, Ohio was admitted to the Union as a state. In 1825, Lebanon became part of the newly created Township of Athens and in 1830 it became a village. On July 1, 1836, Athens incorporated as a city. In 1902, Lebanon amalgamated with Athens to form the City of Columbus.
